クラブ経歴[編集]

デビュー前[編集]

アルバセテ・バロンピエ[編集]

8歳のときに地元アルバセテ・バロンピエの下部組織に入団した。12歳の時に出場した全国大会では惚れ惚れする程のドリブル能力と視野の広さを見せ^[7]、様々なクラブから注目を集めた。レアル・マドリードの下部組織に入団する予定だったが、両親の意向で取りやめられ、両親とFCバルセロナの下部組織寮（ラ・マシア）を見学して好印象を持ったことからFCバルセロナに入団した^[8]。

FCバルセロナ[編集]

MFセスク・ファブレガス同様、入団当初は守備的ミッドフィールダーだったが^[9]、ボディバランス、精密なコントロール、ボールキープの技術などが評価されて攻撃的ミッドフィールダーに転向した。シャイな性格であり、ラ・マシアではしばしばホームシックにかかった^[10]。

U-15チームではキャプテンを務め、1999年のナイキ・プレミア・カップ決勝ではロスタイムに決勝点を挙げて優勝に貢献し、大会最優秀選手に選ばれた。イニエスタにトロフィーを手渡したのは、当時トップチームでキャプテンを務めていたMFジョゼップ・グアルディオラであり、グアルディオラは「今まで見た中で最高の選手」と記した写真をイニエスタに贈った^[11]。グアルディオラはクラブの若手有望株だったMFシャビ・エルナンデスに「じきにお前は俺を引退に追い込むだろうが、あの坊や（イニエスタ）が俺たちふたりを引退に追い込むかもしれないぞ」と語りかけたのはこの大会時であったと伝えられている^[12][13]。

FCバルセロナ[編集]

2002-03シーズン・デビュー[編集]

2002年10月、監督のルイス・ファン・ハールによってトップチームに招集され、10月29日のUEFAチャンピオンズリーグ、クラブ・ブルッヘ戦でデビューした。そのままトップチームに定着すると、デビュー直後から良質なプレーを見せ、スペインメディアからはMFフアン・ロマン・リケルメに取って代わる存在だと報じられた^[14]。トップチーム昇格後に家族のために地元に建てた家は青とえんじ色に塗られ、観光名所になっている^[8]。

フランク・ライカールト監督時代（2003年〜2008年）[編集]

2003-04シーズンは主にFWロナウジーニョの控えとしてリーグ戦11試合に出場し、4月10日のバジャドリード戦でラ・リーガ初ゴールを決めた^[15]。2004-05シーズンはリーグ戦38試合中37試合に出場したが、その大半は途中出場だった。2005-06シーズン前半戦は途中出場が中心だったが、2005年12月上旬にシャビが靭帯を痛めて長期離脱したため、イニエスタがその代役を任され、先発出場回数が増加したことでより高いレベルの選手へ成長した。監督、フランク・ライカールトの下でラ・リーガとUEFAチャンピオンズリーグの2冠達成に貢献した。

2006年8月22日のジョアン・ガンペール杯、バイエルン・ミュンヘン戦ではゲームキャプテンを任され、勝利してトロフィーを掲げた。UEFAチャンピオンズリーグ、レフスキ・ソフィア戦では今まで経験したことがなかった左ウイングのポジションで出場して2ゴールを決めた。決勝トーナメント1回戦のリヴァプール戦は普段通りセンターハーフとして出場したが、その後もしばしば3トップの一角としてプレーした。リーグ戦では自己最多タイの37試合に出場（28試合に先発出場）し、6得点3アシストを決めた。

2007年7月にはライバルのレアル・マドリードが移籍金として6000万ユーロの予算で彼の獲得を狙っていると噂されたが、「引退するまでFCバルセロナでプレーしたい」と述べて噂を一蹴した。同年夏にはASローマに移籍したFWリュドヴィク・ジュリが着けていた背番号8番を譲り受けた。2008年のFIFA最優秀選手賞の投票では37ポイントを獲得し、9位にランクインした^[16]。FCバルセロナの選手はFWリオネル・メッシ、FWサミュエル・エトー、シャビの3人も10位以内に入った。

ドン・バロン紙の選手採点では2006-07シーズンがリーグ5位^[17]、2007-08シーズンがリーグ4位^[18] であり、この2シーズンを通じて最も安定した活躍を見せた選手であるとされた。

ジョセップ・グアルディオラ監督時代（2008年〜2012年）[編集]

2008年9月24日、ロナウジーニョがACミランに移籍したことにより、DFカルレス・プジョル（第1キャプテン）、シャビ（第2キャプテン）、GKビクトル・バルデス（第3キャプテン）と一緒に新しいキャプテンの一人（第4キャプテン）に選ばれた。11月中旬に足を負傷し、完全に状態が回復するまで試合出場を控えたが、2009年1月3日のマヨルカ戦の後半途中に復帰し、その10分後にはカンプ・ノウの観客の前で重要な得点を決めて見せた^[19]。2009年2月5日、コパ・デル・レイのマヨルカ戦に出場し、公式戦を通じて250試合出場を達成した^[20]。ホームでのマラガ戦で再び負傷したが、UEFAチャンピオンズリーグ準々決勝、バイエルン・ミュンヘン戦1stレグで復帰し、4-0で快勝した。2009年5月6日、UEFAチャンピオンズリーグ準決勝、チェルシー戦2ndレグでは、後半ロスタイム3分過ぎにメッシからパスを受け、ペナルティエリア外からアウェーゴール差での勝ち抜けを決める重要な得点を叩き込んだ^[21]。バルセロナの枠内シュートはこの1本だけであった。決勝のマンチェスター・ユナイテッド戦ではエトオの先制点をアシストして優勝に貢献したが、試合前に腿を痛めていたにも関わらず無理を押して決勝に出場したことで怪我を悪化させた。この試合後には、ウェイン・ルーニーが「世界のベストプレーヤーはイニエスタ」と表現した^[22]。2008-09シーズンのプレーは高く評価され、カンプ・ノウのみならずアウェーゲームでスタンディング・オベーションを受けることもあった^[23] ほか、ドン・バロン紙の年間最優秀選手にも選ばれた。

2009年8月8日に親友であるダニエル・ハルケが急逝し、泣き崩れるほど悲しんだ^[24][25]。負傷の影響でプレシーズンのフィットネス・トレーニングには参加できず^[26]、頻発する怪我のためにシーズン前半戦は途中出場がほとんどだった^[27]。11月27日、クラブとの契約を1年延長して2015年までとし、契約解除金は1億5000万ユーロから2億ユーロに引き上げられた^[28]。FIFAクラブワールドカップ2009にも出場し準決勝のアトランテFC戦では相手DF2人の間を通す絶妙なスルーパスでペドロのゴールをアシストした。2009年のFIFA年間最優秀選手賞では134ポイントを獲得して5位に選ばれ、FIFAベストイレブンに選ばれた^[29]。同年のバロンドール投票では4位に選ばれた^[30]。チームは勝ち点99を獲得してリーグ優勝を果たしたが、練習中に怪我を再発させ、チームより一足早くシーズンを終えた^[31]。

2010-11シーズン開幕戦のエスタディオ・エル・サルディネーロでのラシン・サンタンデール戦で30mの距離からロングシュートを決めた^[32]。ラシン・サンタンデール戦とエスタディオ・ビセンテ・カルデロンでのアトレティコ・マドリード戦では、2010 FIFAワールドカップ決勝で優勝を決める得点をイニエスタが挙げたことに敬意を表し、アウェーファンから観客総立ちでの拍手を受けた^[33]。

2012〜2014[編集]

2011-2012シーズンの最初の活躍はスーペルコパ・デ・エスパーニャでのレアル・マドリードとの対戦で、2011年8月17日にバルセロナのホームで行われたセカンドレグで先制ゴールを決めた。試合はバルセロナが3-2で勝利し、2試合合計5-3で制した^[34]。同年10月19日に行われたUEFAチャンピオンズリーグ 2011-12 グループリーグのFCヴィクトリア・プルゼニ戦ではメッシとの華麗なパス交換から先制ゴールを決めた^[35]。2012年3月24日に行われたリーガ・エスパニョーラ第30節のRCDマヨルカ戦で2-0で勝利したことにより、出場したリーガ・エスパニョーラでの試合の無敗記録をそれまでの最長だったエミリオ・ブトラゲーニョの50試合を抜いて51試合と更新し、最終的に第35節のレアル・マドリード戦で1-2で敗れるまで、55試合無敗（47勝8分）のリーグ新記録を打ち立てた^[36][37][38]。同年4月3日に行われたUEFAチャンピオンズリーグ 2011-12 決勝トーナメントの準々決勝ACミラン戦のセカンドレグでは後半8分にゴールを挙げ、チームは3-1で勝利し、2試合合計3-1で準決勝に進出した^[39]。準決勝のチェルシー戦ではセカンドレグでゴールを挙げたが、2試合合計2-3でバルセロナの敗退が決まった^[40][41]。この年の活躍でFIFAバロンドールの最終候補3名に選出され、最終的に3位になった^[42][43][44]。

2012-2013シーズン、リーガ・エスパニョーラ第13節のレバンテ戦で1ゴール3アシストを記録し、チームを4-0の勝利に導いた^[45]。このシーズンでは最終的にリーグトップの16アシストを記録した^[46]。

2013年12月23日、2015年までとなっていたバルセロナとの契約を3年延長し、2018年6月までとする新契約にサインした^[47][48]。

ルイス・エンリケ監督時代（2014〜2017）[編集]

2014-15シーズンはチーム内での役割の変化により、公式戦2ゴール、8アシストと個人成績では物足りないシーズンとなるも、変わらずチームの主力として活躍。チャンピオンズリーグ決勝のユヴェントス戦ではイヴァン・ラキティッチの先制点をアシストし、UEFAチャンピオンズリーグの決勝戦では最多となる3戦連続アシストを記録。決勝戦ではマン・オブ・ザ・マッチに選出され、これによってFIFAワールドカップ、UEFA欧州選手権と併せ、3つの国際大会の決勝でマン・オブ・ザ・マッチに選ばれた史上初の選手となった^[49]。さらにチームはリーガ・エスパニョーラ、コパ・デル・レイ、チャンピオンズリーグの三冠を達成。チャンピオンズリーグの個人優勝回数はクラレンス・セードルフと並んで史上最多の4度目である。

2015-16シーズンはシャビ・エルナンデスの退団によりキャプテンに就任。2016年11月21日、レアル・マドリードとのエル・クラシコでは1ゴール1アシストを決めて敵地での4-0での大勝に貢献。交代時にはアウェーにも関わらず相手サポーターからスタンディングオベーションが贈られた。

2017年2月19日、リーガ・エスパニョーラ第23節のレガネス戦では通算400試合を達成した。バルセロナで400試合を達成したのはシャビに続いて史上2人目。

2017-18シーズン・退団[編集]

2017-18シーズンは新たに監督に就任したエルネスト・バルベルデのプレー時間の管理により、出場した試合では常に好パフォーマンスを披露した。10月5日、バルセロナと契約を延長し、クラブ史上初の生涯契約を結んだことが発表された。

生涯契約を結んだイニエスタだったが、2018年に入り退団報道が過熱。チャンピオンズリーグのチェルシー戦、2ndlegの試合後のインタビューにおいて自身の去就について、「4月末までには決断する」と述べた^[50]。2017-18シーズンのチャンピオンズリーグのローマ戦敗退後、記者から「これが最後のCLになるか」と質問され、非常に落胆した様子で「その可能性もある」と答えた^[51]。4月14日のバレンシア戦後、自身の去就について既に決断していることを明らかにした^[52]。退団が確実視される中で迎えたコパ・デル・レイ決勝、セビージャ戦ではリオネル・メッシのアシストから1ゴールを記録するなど素晴らしいパフォーマンスを見せ、チームの4年連続30回目のコパ・デル・レイ制覇に大きく貢献。交代時には両クラブのサポーターからスタンディングオベーションを受け、ベンチでは涙を浮かべていた^[53]。2018年4月27日、イニエスタは会見を開き、同シーズン限りでのバルセロナ退団を発表した^[54]。バルセロナで最後の試合であるレアル・ソシエダ戦では、カンプノウは「INFINIT INIESTA」というコレオでイニエスタを迎えた^[55][56]。この試合でも好プレーを披露し、バルセロナの勝利(1-0)に貢献した^[57]。試合後にはイニエスタへの感謝を示す大規模なセレモニーが行われ、選手やファンが彼との別れを惜しんだ^[58]。その後、再び静寂のカンプノウに素足で戻りピッチに腰を下ろし、22年間過ごしたクラブとの別れを人知れず惜しんだ^[59][60]。

ヴィッセル神戸[編集]

2018年5月頃から、複数のメディアがイニエスタのJリーグ・ヴィッセル神戸への移籍の可能性について報道する。5月18日早朝にスポーツ報知が日本の大手メディアで初めて「イニエスタ、神戸入団合意」と報じ^[61]、5月23日にはNHKをはじめとする複数の新聞社・放送局が一斉にこのニュースを伝えた^[62]。翌5月24日、イニエスタが自身のTwitterとInstagramのアカウントで、楽天会長兼社長およびヴィッセル神戸オーナーの三木谷浩史はTwitterアカウントで神戸移籍を示唆するコメントと共に両者の2ショット写真を投稿^{[63][64][65][66][67]}。同日午後に記者会見と神戸・バルセロナ両クラブからのリリースで、神戸への移籍が正式に発表された^{[68][69][70][71][72]}。東京都内で行われた記者会見では、日本入りに同行した三木谷と壇上で抱き合った後、入団契約書にサインを交わした^[72]。契約期間は2021年までの契約であるとイニエスタ自身はコメントを残している^[73]。

同会見でのフォトセッションにおいて、用意された自身のネームと共に背番号8が入った神戸のユニフォームを掲げ撮影に臨んでいたが^[71]、同背番号は2018シーズンにおいては三田啓貴が既に着用しており、Jリーグの当時の規則ではシーズン中の同一選手の背番号変更が認められていなかった為、三田を移籍させる、あるいは一旦契約解除の手続きをとった上で再度選手登録を行う等の手段を取らない限り、同シーズン中にイニエスタを背番号8で選手登録するのは不可能であった^[74]。翌25日、三木谷が三田が背番号を譲る意思を示した事、それに対しイニエスタが三田に直接電話で感謝の言葉を述べた事をTwitterにて明かした^[75]。Jリーグ側もクラブからの相談を受けて規約改定に前向きな姿勢を示していた^[74]。30日、Jリーグよりユニフォーム要項の改定が発表され、同一選手のシーズン中の背番号変更が可能となった^[76]。これを受けて、同日にイニエスタの背番号決定と三田の背番号変更（8番→7番）がクラブより発表され^[77]、バルセロナ時代に引き続き、背番号8を着用することが正式に決定した。

2018年[編集]

7月22日、第17節・湘南ベルマーレ戦の後半13分に渡邉千真との交代によりJリーグ初出場を果たした。Jリーグ2戦目となった柏レイソル戦にスタメン出場した後、7月28日に家族と再来日するためにスペインに一時帰国^[78]。その後、行われる予定だったアウェーでのセレッソ大阪戦とFC東京戦の2試合はイニエスタの効果もありチケットが完売^[79]。突然の帰国発表だった事もあり、イニエスタ目当てでチケットを買ったファンから不満の声も出て、試合以外でも話題を集める結果となった^[80]。なお、イニエスタのチーム合流は、元々7月を予定していなかったが、本人の「1日でも早く神戸に来て、選手と一緒にボールを蹴りたい」という申し出があったため、W杯終了後に休みを削って、前倒しでJリーグデビューを果たしている^[81]。イニエスタは予定通り8月5日に家族と再来日している。

Jリーグ3試合目となる8月11日の第21節・ジュビロ磐田戦の前半15分に、中盤のルーカス・ポドルスキからのパスに反応すると、ターンでDF大井健太郎、GKクシシュトフ・カミンスキーを相次いで躱してボールをゴールへと流し込み、Jリーグ初得点をマークした^[82]。

2019年[編集]

2019年4月23日、ポドルスキの後任として神戸のキャプテンに就任した^[83]。5月頃からは、下半身の筋肉系の違和感で欠場が続いた。6月15日に行われたFC東京戦で6試合ぶりの先発復帰を果たし、その試合でシーズン初ゴールを決めてチームの勝利に貢献した^[84]。第17節の名古屋グランパス戦では移籍後初のリーグ戦複数得点となる2ゴールを決めた。同年にはJリーグベストイレブンに選出された^[85][86]。なお、この年のベストイレブンは、優勝した横浜F・マリノスから4名、準優勝したFC東京から6名が選出され、この2チーム以外に所属する選手はイニエスタのみだった^[85]。また、スペイン国籍を有する選手としてJリーグ史上初の受賞となった^[85]。

12月21日、天皇杯準決勝、清水エスパルス戦では先制ゴールを決め、更に古橋亨梧のゴールをアシストして決勝進出に貢献すると^[87]、翌年1月1日、天皇杯決勝戦でもキャプテンとして先発出場し、クラブ初のタイトル獲得に貢献した^[88]。

2020年[編集]

2020年2月8日、ゼロックススーパーカップの横浜F・マリノス戦ではドウグラスの先制点をアシスト^[89]。チームとして初出場となったAFCチャンピオンズリーグでは、グループリーグ初戦のジョホール・ダルル・タクジムFC戦で2アシストの活躍で勝利に貢献^{[nb 1]}、第3節の広州恒大淘宝足球倶楽部戦では前半に1アシストを決めると、後半には同大会での初ゴールを決め、チームを同大会初出場にして決勝トーナメント進出に導いた^[90]。トーナメント1戦目の上海海港足球倶楽部戦でも得点を決めるも怪我で途中交代。準々決勝の水原三星ブルーウィングス戦では、試合に出れるコンディションではなかったが、自ら出場を志願し怪我を押して延長戦から途中出場。試合はPK戦までもつれ込み、第1キッカーとしてPKを成功させ、準決勝進出に貢献。しかし、この試合で怪我を悪化させ、長期離脱の見込みとなった^[91]。大会終了後にスペインに帰国して検査した結果、右大腿直筋近位部腱断裂で全治4カ月の重傷と分かり手術する事となった^[92]。

2021年[編集]

2021年シーズンは前年から続く怪我の影響で欠場が続いていたが、5月1日に行われたJ1第12節のサンフレッチェ広島戦にて途中出場で復帰を果たした^[93]。自身の誕生日である5月11日に記者会見を開き、神戸と2年間の契約延長を発表した^[94]。この会見で「現役生活をここで最後まで続けたい。選手としてだけでなく、常に関わり続けたい」と神戸で引退する意思を示し、引退後もクラブの発展に貢献したいと話した。また、神戸オーナーの三木谷が「（コロナ禍で）経済的にも大変厳しい状況にある中、かなり歩み寄りをしていただいた」と説明。推定年俸32億5000万円から約4割の大減俸、推定20億円で更改したとみられている^[95]。6月13日、ルヴァンカッププレーオフ第2戦の浦和戦で強烈な弾道のFKでシーズン初ゴールを決めたが、試合は2-2で引き分け、準々決勝には進出出来なかった^[96]。10月にはリーグ戦3試合3得点1アシストを記録し、J1リーグ月間MVPに選出された^[97]。この年チームはACL圏内で神戸のJ1最高順位となるリーグ3位で終え、自身も3年連続でJリーグ優秀選手賞^[98]、Jリーグでは2度目となるベストイレブンに選出された^[99]。

2022年[編集]

3月6日に行われたJ1リーグ第3節のサンフレッチェ広島戦でチームメイト山口蛍の折り返しに右足で合わせシーズン初ゴールを挙げた^[100]。3月15日に行われたAFCチャンピオンズリーグプレーオフステージ・メルボルン・ビクトリーFC戦では延長を含む115分間プレーし、先制点を挙げた^[101]。4月10日に行われたJ1リーグ第8節セレッソ大阪戦では前半45分のみで交代。この交代について、ミゲル・アンヘル・ロティーナ監督は「本人から交代を要求された。疲れを感じており、感覚がよくなかった」と説明した^[102]。その後集中開催されたACLのグループステージを欠場したが^[103]、第13節のサガン鳥栖戦で1ゴール1アシストを決め、チームはリーグ戦初勝利を挙げた^[104]。リーグ中断期間の7月17日に、家庭の事情により一時帰国^[105]。30日の柏レイソル戦に出場を見込んでいたものの、再来日が遅れたため欠場した^[106]。8月1日に再来日し^[107]、3日に行われたルヴァンカップ準々決勝第1戦アビスパ福岡戦に後半15分から出場^[108]。8月6日のJ1リーグ第24節セレッソ大阪戦ではフル出場した。8月18日に行われたACLラウンド16横浜F・マリノス戦ではベンチ入りしたものの出場機会なく試合を終えたことについて、吉田孝行監督は試合後の会見で「試合に出られる状況ではあったが、試合展開で今日の出番はなかった」と説明した^[109][110]が、8月6日のリーグ戦を最後に怪我のため戦列を離れた^[111]。10月11日に、吉田孝行は取材に対し「月末の試合で順調にいけば戻ってくる」と話し、シーズン中の復帰の見通しを明らかにした^[112]。10月29日に行われたJ1リーグ第33節川崎フロンターレ戦後半29分に途中出場。8月6日のセレッソ大阪戦以来、約3ヶ月ぶりの出場となった^[113]。

Early career[edit]

Iniesta comes from Fuentealbilla, a small village in the province of Albacete, Castile–La Mancha, where he mostly played futsal due to the lack of football pitches in the village.^[7] At the age of 12, while playing for Albacete Balompié in a junior seven-a-side tournament in Albacete, he attracted the attention of scouts from clubs around Spain.^[8] His parents knew Barcelona‘s youth team coach, Enrique Orizaola, and he persuaded them to consider sending Iniesta to the Barcelona youth academy. Iniesta traveled there with his parents and visited La Masia, the farmhouse where the club houses its young players; the trip convinced them to enroll Iniesta in the Barcelona youth ranks.^[9]

Iniesta says he “cried rivers” the day he left for La Masia and struggled being separated from his parents;^[11] he was very shy and kept to himself while there.^[12] He captained the Barcelona Under-15 team to victory in the Nike Premier Cup of 1999, scoring the winning goal in the last minute of the final, and was named player of the tournament. Just after Iniesta arrived at the club, then-captain Pep Guardiola famously told fellow midfielder Xavi: “You’re going to retire me. This lad [Iniesta] is going to retire us all.”^[13]

2004–2008[edit]

Iniesta joined the first team during the tenure of Radomir Antić. On 29 October 2002, he made his first team debut in a 1-0 away win against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League group stage. In the 2004–05 season, he featured in 37 out of 38 league games—more than any other player—although 25 of these were substitute appearances. He scored twice as Barcelona won La Liga.^[14] An injury to Xavi at the start of the 2005–06 season allowed Iniesta more regular starts in the centre of midfield, and he continued to improve and develop.^[15] He played in 11 UEFA Champions League games, including a half-time appearance in the 2006 final, to replace Edmílson.^[16] His contribution to the team was praised by manager Frank Rijkaard as Barcelona won a league and Champions League double.^[17]

The 2006–07 season saw Iniesta’s profile continue to rise and he earned plaudits for his willingness to play in any position for his team. In the pre-season, he lifted the Joan Gamper Trophy as the captain of the team after a 4–0 victory over German side Bayern Munich. Iniesta played for the first time as a left wing-forward for Barça in two Champions League matches against Levski Sofia, finding the net twice. In the first knockout stage of the same competition, he played in central midfield against Liverpool. Despite being moved around the pitch by manager Rijkaard, the 2006–07 season remains Iniesta’s highest scoring thus far.

With the departure of Ludovic Giuly ahead of the 2007–08 campaign, Iniesta was able to switch his number 24 shirt for his preferred number 8.^[18] Despite rumours of a possible transfer before the season,^[19] he extended his contract to 2014 on 25 January 2008,^[20] with his buy-out clause being raised to €150 million.^[21] Don Balón, a member of European Sports Magazines, named Iniesta one of the most consistent performers in the previous two seasons of La Liga; he placed fifth in 2006–07 and fourth in 2007–08.^[22][23] He also placed ninth in the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year voting, gaining 37 total points.^[24]

2008–09[edit]

At the start of the 2008–09 season, in September 2008, Iniesta was elected the fourth-choice captain behind, in order of preference, Carles Puyol, Xavi and Víctor Valdés; all four were products of the Barcelona youth system.^[25] His performances throughout the season were highly lauded, and he received standing ovations both in Barcelona at the Camp Nou, as well as from rival supporters in away matches.^[26] A leg injury sustained in mid-November 2008 left Iniesta sidelined until 3 January; initially expected to return to action in six weeks, he did not want to come back until he was 100 percent. Upon his return to action on 3 January, as a 65th-minute substitute against Mallorca, he scored a crucial goal after just ten minutes on the pitch and completed a Barcelona comeback in front of the Camp Nou.^[27] 3 days later, he captained Barcelona for the first time in an official match, a 3–1 victory against Atlético Madrid at the Vicente Calderón in the round-of-16 first leg of the Copa del Rey.

Iniesta sustained another injury during a home match against Málaga, but returned to action for the first leg Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich on 8 April, which Barcelona won 4–0.^[28] He scored a vital equaliser in the final minute of stoppage time during the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, with a curling strike with the outside of his right foot 25 yards from goal, securing the tie on away goals as the match finished 1–1 at Stamford Bridge.^[29] In the season review, Un Any Al Paradis, Iniesta wrote, “I connected with that shot with the outside, not the inside or the tip of my boot, but right from my heart, with all my might.”^[30]

Iniesta’s goal against Chelsea sent Barcelona through to the final in Rome against defending champions Manchester United. Prior to the final, United manager Alex Ferguson identified Iniesta as Barça’s biggest threat: “He’s fantastic. He makes the team work. The way he finds passes, his movement and ability to create space is incredible. He’s so important for Barcelona.”^[11] Despite a thigh injury, Iniesta played and was influential in the game, providing the assist for the first goal scored by Samuel Eto’o as his team went on to win 2–0.^[32] In his analysis, David Pleat wrote, “In the end the midfield artistry of Iniesta and Xavi, helped by [Lionel] Messi, was the critical factor.”^[33] After the game, United striker Wayne Rooney described Iniesta as the best player in the world.^[34]

Iniesta received plaudits for his performances that season; Don Balón rated him as the league’s most consistent performer.^[35] Later that year, he placed fifth for the 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year award, with 134 votes,^[36] and fourth for the Ballon d’Or, receiving 149 points.^[37] Barcelona extended his contract by one year, until 2015, and raised his buy-out clause to €200 million.^[38]

2009–2012[edit]

Barcelona won a second successive league title in the 2009–10 season, securing a record 99 points. Individually, however, Iniesta endured a campaign largely disrupted by recurring injuries. He missed pre-season fitness training due to the thigh tear suffered in the 2009 Champions League final.^[39] Despite featuring in almost as many matches as the previous season, he did so mostly as a substitute, starting only 20 games throughout.^[40] His season came to a premature end in April after he aggravated a previous calf injury during training.^[41]

A contributing factor of Iniesta’s fractured season were the episodes of psychological instability he suffered privately following the death of his close friend Daniel Jarque, a fellow footballer, in August 2009. Even when physically fit, he was often unable to complete training sessions or exert himself. After seeking psychological help, he experienced catharsis when he scored Spain‘s match-winning goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final, which he dedicated to Jarque by revealing the message “Dani Jarque, always with us” written on his undershirt.^[42] “I did it because I felt it deeply,” Iniesta said at the time. “It showed that what is more important than rivalry, your team or your colours is to be human and a good person. I am delighted because it was the most important moment in my career.”^[43] Regarding the recurrent injuries that plagued his season, he said, “It was hard, but I will start with more desire than ever.”^[43]

Iniesta scored his first goal of the 2010–11 season during the opening league fixture against Racing de Santander, lobbing the ball into the net from a distance of 30 yards.^[44] Throughout the campaign, he received standing ovations from opposition fans, including at El Sardinero and the Vicente Calderón Stadium, in appreciation of his World Cup-winning goal.^[45] Another standing ovation came on the home pitch of Espanyol in the Derbi barceloní, with the crowd acknowledging his friendship with Daniel Jarque, Espanyol’s captain at the time of his death.^[46] Iniesta was one of the three finalists for the 2010 FIFA Ballon d’Or alongside Xavi and Messi, placing as runner-up behind the Argentine.^[47]

Iniesta started the 2011–12 season by scoring the opening goal in the second leg of the Supercopa de España against rivals Real Madrid. Barcelona went on to win the match 3–2 and the cup 5–4 on aggregate. One of his best goals followed in October against Viktoria Plzeň in the Champions League group stage after an interchange of passes with Messi. Iniesta played a record 51 matches unbeaten in La Liga, concluding with Barcelona’s 2–0 defeat of Mallorca on 24 March.^[48] In the Champions League, he ended a goal drought by scoring a vital goal against Milan in the quarter-finals. From there, he went on to score in the semi-final against Chelsea to make the scoreline 2–0, but the match ended 2–2, eliminating his team 3–2 on aggregate. Towards the end of the year, on 25 November, Iniesta was named man of the match after scoring one goal and providing three assists in a 4–0 win over Levante.^[49] His performances earned him third place in the voting of the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or.^[50]

2013–2018[edit]

Iniesta signed a new contract with Barcelona in December 2013, keeping him at the club until 2018.^[51] As vice-captain, he regularly captained Barça throughout the club’s second treble-winning campaign of the 2014–15 season, and became captain after Carles Puyol‘s retirement and Xavi‘s departure. Iniesta scored three times during the team’s Copa del Rey campaign,^[52] and was man of the match in the 2015 UEFA Champions League Final, having assisted Ivan Rakitić‘s opening goal in the 3–1 defeat of Italian champions Juventus at Berlin‘s Olympiastadion.^[53] Their European victory made Barcelona the first club in history to win the treble of domestic league, domestic cup and European Cup twice;^[54] Iniesta was among the seven players to have been a part of both treble-winning teams.^[54]

During the first Clásico of the 2015–16 season, on 21 November, Iniesta became only the third Barcelona player, after Diego Maradona in 1983 and Ronaldinho in 2005, to receive applause from Real Madrid fans at the Santiago Bernabéu.^[55] His man-of-the-match performance included a goal and an assist, contributing to a resounding 4–0 victory.^[56]

He signed a lifetime contract with Barcelona on 6 October 2017, effectively keeping him with the club for the remainder of his career.^[57] He played the 650th game of his career for Barcelona against Levante on 7 January 2018, he was replaced by André Gomes after 76 minutes as the game ended 3–0 in favour of Barcelona.^[58]

Despite signing a lifetime contract, on 27 April 2018, Iniesta announced he would be leaving Barcelona by the end of the season.^[59] He made his 674th and final appearance for Barcelona on 20 May, in the final league match of the season, a 1–0 home victory over Real Sociedad, as Barcelona celebrated the victory of their 25th league and 30th Copa del Rey title; he came off in the 81st minute for Paco Alcácer.^[60]

Vissel Kobe[edit]

On 24 May 2018, Japanese club Vissel Kobe announced the signing of Iniesta on a three-year deal.^[61] He made his debut on 22 July, coming on as a second-half substitute for Kazuma Watanabe in a 0–3 defeat against Shonan Bellmare.^[62] On 11 August 2018, Iniesta scored his first goal in the J1 League in a 2–1 win over Jubilo Iwata.^[63]

On 21 December 2019, he scored the opening goal in a 3–1 win over Shimizu S-Pulse in the semi final of the 2019 Emperor’s Cup.^[64] On 1 January 2020, he won his first trophy in Japan, starting in Vissel Kobe’s 2–0 victory over Kashima Antlers in the final of the 2019 Emperor’s Cup.^[65] A month later, he also won the 2020 Japanese Super Cup.^[66] On 7 December 2020, Iniesta suffered a tear of the rectus femoris muscle during a 2–0 win in the round of 16 of the 2020 AFC Champions League against Shanghai SIPG, in which he also scored the first goal of the game.^[67] He had a successful surgery in Barcelona a few days later.^[68]

On 11 May 2021, Iniesta signed a contract extension with Vissel Kobe, keeping him at the club for another two seasons.^[69] On 11 November 2021, he was named J.League Monthly MVP after scoring three league goals in October.^[70] He was named in the 2021 J.League Best XI on 6 December 2021.^[71]

On 14 May 2022, Iniesta scored a goal and guided Vissel Kobe to first league win of the 2022 season in a 4–0 win over Sagan Tosu.^[72]

Beginnings in Chugoku[edit]

The club was founded in 1966 as the semi-professional Kawasaki Steel Soccer Club in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture.^[3] It was first promoted to the Japan Soccer League Division 2 in 1986, and stayed there until the JSL folded in 1992.^[3]

Move to Kansai and professionalism[edit]

In 1995, the city of Kobe reached an agreement with Kawasaki Steel, the parent company, to move the club to Kobe and compete for a spot in the professional J.League as Vissel Kobe. Vissel is a combination of the words “victory” and “vessel”, in recognition of Kobe’s history as a port city.^[3] (Owing to its importance to the city of Kobe, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, parent company of former team patron Kawasaki Steel, remains a Vissel Kobe sponsor. Kawasaki Steel was eventually sold off to become part of JFE Holdings.)

Vissel Kobe began play in 1995 in the Japan Football League, a league below J.League, and the supermarket chain Daiei was slated as the club’s primary investor. However, the economic downturn following the Great Hanshin earthquake forced Daiei to pull out and the city of Kobe became responsible for operating the club.

Despite finishing 2nd in the JFL in 1996, Vissel was promoted to the J.League (the champions, Honda FC, refused to abandon their corporate ownership and become a professional club) and began play in the top division of Japanese football in 1997. However, due to mismanagement, including the inability to secure investors and sponsors, Vissel has never been a contender for the league title. In December, 2003, mounting financial losses forced the club to file for bankruptcy protection.

Crimson Group years (2004–2014)[edit]

In January 2004, Vissel was sold to Crimson Group, parent company of online merchant Rakuten, whose president is Kobe native Hiroshi Mikitani. Vissel’s first signing under the Mikitani regime, İlhan Mansız, who was acquired partly to capitalize on his popularity during the 2002 FIFA World Cup hosted in Korea and Japan, was a massive failure – the Turkish forward played just three matches before leaving the team because of a knee injury. Mikitani also alienated supporters by changing the team uniform colours from black and white stripes to crimson, after his Crimson Group and the colour of his alma mater, Harvard Business School. The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, a baseball team also owned by Rakuten but based in Sendai, wear the same colours.

Vissel finished 11th in the league in 2004, the same position as the previous year, and finished 18th and last place in 2005, resulting in automatic relegation from J.League Division 1, or J1, to J2. During the two-year span, Vissel had five different head coaches. 2006 was Vissel’s first season in J2 after nine years in the top division of soccer in Japan. They finished 3rd in the 2006 season and were promoted to J1 after beating Avispa Fukuoka in the promotion/relegation play-offs.

During the period of 2007 to 2011 Vissel finished in the bottom half of the table each year. In 2012 they finished 16th, third from last, and were again relegated to J2. In 2013, Vissel finished in second place, 4 points behind Gamba Osaka, which secured their return to J1 for the 2014 season.

On 6 December 2014, Rakuten Inc. bought the team from the Crimson Group.^[4]

Rakuten years and first successes (2014–present)[edit]

In May 2018, Vissel signed 2010 FIFA World Cup winner Andrés Iniesta from FC Barcelona.^[5] In December 2018 Vissel Kobe managed to sign David Villa from New York City FC the Spanish striker scored 13 goals in 28 games. Alongside Sergi Samper and Andrés Iniesta, Villa was the third Spaniard in the team in that season in which the Emperor’s Cup was won.

On 1 January 2020, first time finalist Vissel beat Kashima Antlers in the 2019 Emperor’s Cup final at the recently opened New National Stadium to win the first title in the club history. The furthest Kobe had been in the Cup was the semi-finals of 2000 and 2017.^[6] This was Spanish striker David Villa‘s last professional match.^[7] Vissel also qualified for the 2020 AFC Champions League for the first time. On 8 February 2020, Vissel beat Yokohama F. Marinos to win their first Japanese Super Cup title and respectively their second national title ever.^[8] In 2021 they achieved an historic third place in the table, qualifying for the AFC Champions League yet again.

Club career[edit]

Born in Barcelona, Catalonia, and a product of local RCD Espanyol‘s youth system, Jarque made his La Liga debut with his hometown club on 20 October 2002, in a match against Recreativo de Huelva during 2002–03.^[3] After a combined 15 appearances in two seasons, he went on to become a defensive mainstay for a team that won the 2006 edition of the Copa del Rey;^[4] on 18 September 2005, he scored the game’s only goal to help the hosts defeat Real Madrid.^[5]

In 2006–07, after renewing his contract until 2009,^[6] Jarque appeared in 14 UEFA Cup games as Espanyol reached the final, lost on penalties to Sevilla FC.^[7] In the previous league campaign, he contributed with four league goals as the Pericos finished 15th.^{[8][9][10][11]}

At the start of 2009–10, Jarque relieved Raúl Tamudo of his captain duties.^[12][13]
