    Types of COVID-19 Vaccines Available

There are four approved or authorized vaccines in the United States.

    • Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are mRNA vaccines.
    • Novavax COVID-19 vaccine is a protein subunit vaccine.
    • Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen (J&J/Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine is a viral vector vaccine and can be given in some situations.

These vaccines are given as a shot in the muscle of the upper arm or in the thigh of a young child. COVID-19 vaccine ingredients are considered safe for most people. Nearly all of the ingredients in COVID-19 vaccines are ingredients found in many foods—fats, sugar, and salts. None of the COVID-19 vaccines affect or interact with our DNA and the following are not included in the vaccines:

    • No preservatives such as thimerosal or mercury or any other preservatives.
    • No antibiotics such as sulfonamide or any other antibiotics.
    • No medicines or therapeutics such as ivermectin or any other medications.
    • No tissues such as aborted fetal cells, gelatin, or any materials from any animal.
    • No food proteins such as eggs or egg products, gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, nut products, or any nut byproducts. (COVID-19 vaccines are not manufactured in facilities that produce food products).
    • No metals such as iron, nickel, cobalt, titanium, or rare earth alloys. They also do not have any manufactured products like microelectronics, electrodes, carbon nanotubes or other nanostructures, or nanowire semiconductors.
    • No latex. The vial stoppers used to hold the vaccine also do not contain latex.

After the body produces an immune response, it discards all of the vaccine ingredients, just as it would discard any substance that cells no longer need. This process is a part of normal body functioning.

COVID-19 vaccine and booster doses and timing are different for people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised.

    Vaccines for Immunocompromised

Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA COVID-19 vaccines

mRNA vaccines use mRNA created in a laboratory to teach our cells how to make a protein—or even just a piece of a protein—that triggers an immune response inside our bodies. The mRNA from the vaccines is broken down within a few days after vaccination and discarded from the body.

    Vaccine Schedule

Learn about the recommended timing between Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines and boosters for people:

    COMIRNATY Name Change

After receiving U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval on August 23, 2021, the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for people ages 16 years and older began to be marketed under the COMIRNATY brand name. The vaccine was also FDA approved for pre-teens and teens ages 12–15 on July 8, 2022.  No change was made to the vaccine’s formula with the name change.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine label remains for people ages 6 months–11 years since the vaccine is FDA authorized but not yet approved for these age groups.

Who can get a COVID-19 vaccine

Everyone aged 5 (on or before 31 August 2022) and over can get a 1st and 2nd dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

People aged 16 and over, and some children aged 12 to 15, can also get a booster dose.

People aged 5 and over who had a severely weakened immune system when they had their 1st or 2nd dose will be offered an additional primary dose (3rd dose) before any booster doses.

Some people, including those aged 50 years or over, those at higher risk or who are pregnant, and frontline health and social care workers, will be offered a seasonal booster (autumn booster).

    Types of COVID-19 vaccine

The COVID-19 vaccines currently approved for use in the UK are:

    • Moderna vaccine
    • Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine
    • Nuvaxovid vaccine (Novavax)
    • Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine (not currently available)
    • Janssen vaccine (not currently available)
    • Valneva vaccine (not currently available)

    Which vaccine will I get?

You cannot usually choose which vaccine you have. If you book online, you’ll only be offered appointments for vaccines that are suitable for you.

Most people can have any of the COVID-19 vaccines, but some people are only offered certain vaccines.

    For example:

    • if you’re pregnant or under 40 you’ll usually be offered appointments for the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines
    • if you’re under 18, you’ll only be offered the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine

You should have the same vaccine for both your 1st and 2nd doses, unless you had serious side effects (such as a serious allergic reaction) after your 1st dose.

Most people will be offered a booster dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine or Moderna vaccine.

This means your booster dose may be different from the vaccine you had for your first 2 doses.
