gareth bale, 2022-08-07, Gareth Bale scores UNREAL goal in Real Salt Lake vs. LAFC | MLS Highlights | ESPN FC, LAFC dominated against Real Salt Lake 4-1 after Gareth Bale scored an incredible goal late in the 87 minute.

Early life and career

Bale was born in Cardiff, Wales, to parents Frank, a school caretaker, and Debbie Bale, an operations manager. He is the nephew of former Cardiff City footballer Chris Pike.[5] He attended Eglwys Newydd Primary School in Whitchurch.[6] It was while at this school that he first came to the attention of Southampton at age nine, when he was playing in a six-a-side tournament with his first club, Cardiff Civil Service.[7] Growing up, his footballing hero was fellow Welshman and Manchester United player Ryan Giggs.[8]

Bale attended Whitchurch High School in Cardiff.[9] He was a keen athlete; he played football alongside future Wales rugby captain Sam Warburton,[10] rugby, hockey and excelled at athletics.[11] As a 14-year-old he says that he ran the 100-metre sprint in 11.4 seconds.[8] Because of his superior footballing skill, the school’s PE teacher, Gwyn Morris, had to write special rules which restricted Bale to playing one-touch football and not using his left foot.[10]

Despite being only 16 at the time, Bale helped the school’s under-18 team win the Cardiff & Vale Senior Cup. He left school in the summer of 2005 with a Grade A in PE amongst his other GCSE results. In his final year at school, he was awarded the PE department’s prize for services to sport. In the presentation, Morris commented:

“Gareth has a fierce determination to succeed and has the character and qualities to achieve his personal goals. He is one of the most unselfish individuals that I have had the pleasure to help educate.”[12]

On October 30, 2014, Major League Soccer awarded a new expansion team to Los Angeles.[3] On September 15, 2015, the club announced that Los Angeles Football Club, which had previously been used as a placeholder name for the club, would be the official team name.[4] Henry Nguyen, Los Angeles FC’s principal owner at the time, hinted at this possibility shortly after the club was announced in describing the name as “timeless”.[5]

LAFC announced Bob Bradley as its head coach in July 2017,[6] joining general director John Thorrington in a search for players.[7] Mexican forward Carlos Vela was signed as the club’s first designated player on August 11, 2017.[8]

On March 4, 2018, LAFC played its first MLS game, a 1–0 win against Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. LAFC designated player Diego Rossi scored the club’s first-ever competitive goal in the 11th minute, assisted by Vela.[9]

On March 31, 2018, LAFC suffered its first MLS loss, giving up a 3–0 lead to lose 4–3 to LA Galaxy in the MLS debut of Zlatan Ibrahimović.[10][11] LAFC was the second team ever to lose an MLS game after leading 3–0 during the match.[12] Despite the loss, LAFC won 4 of the 6 games on their road trip to start the season, becoming the first team to earn 12 points from a season opening road trip of 6 games or more.[13] They finished the season with 7 road wins which is the most for an expansion team in the post-shootout era.[14]

LAFC accomplished the best regular season for an MLS expansion team, earning 57 points. The total surpassed the 56 picked up the 1998 Chicago Fire, also coached by Bob Bradley, as well as the post-shootout era record of 55 set in 2017 by Atlanta United.[15] LAFC’s seven road wins also tied for the most ever by an expansion team in the pre or post shootout-era with the ’98 Fire who had two road wins come via the shootout. They finished second all-time in goals scored by an expansion team in a season, with 68, just behind Atlanta’s 70.[15]

On October 6, 2018, LAFC clinched its first playoff spot after a 3–0 victory against the Colorado Rapids[16] finishing third in the West, but were knocked out at home in the first round in a 3–2 loss to sixth-place Real Salt Lake.[17]

2020 CONCACAF Champions League[edit]

Los Angeles had appeared for the first time, in the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League, and advanced in the round of 16 after defeating Club León 3–2 on aggregate after going down 2–0 after the first leg.[18] Following the hiatus of the tournament from the Covid-19 pandemic, Los Angeles subsequently defeated Cruz Azul (2-1) and Club América (3–1) in the quarter- and semi-finals.[19] They became the third MLS side to advance to the Final, where they were defeated by Tigres UANL 2–1, who had been runners-up in previous editions of the tournament.[20][21]

2022 season[edit]

LAFC spent the majority of the 2022 MLS season pushing for the league’s all-time points record (73, set the previous year), but major squad turnover brought about a string of losses (five in their final nine matches) which led to LAFC settling for 67 points as they won their second Supporters’ Shield. This total was equal with the Philadelphia Union, who lost the Shield on a wins tiebreaker. LAFC defeated their archrivals, the Galaxy, 3–2 in the conference semifinals before knocking out Austin FC 3–0 to advance to their first-ever MLS Cup.

Cardiff Civil Service joined the Second Division of the Welsh Football League for the 1990–91 season. The side finished the campaign as champions of the division, scoring 100 goals in the process and winning promotion to the First Division.[2] The Civil Service initially adapted well to the higher tier, finishing in the top eight in four of its first five seasons in the higher tier. This included a fourth placed finish in the 1995–96 campaign, the club’s highest placed finish in the Welsh Football League. However, a gradual decline led the side to finish in the bottom half of the table for the majority of its time in the First Division.[2] The side left the Welsh Football League in 2003.[2] The club’s reserve side spent two season in the South Wales Amateur League.[3]

In the 2011–12 season the club reached the third round of the Welsh Cup.[4]

The club gained media attention following the progress of Welsh footballer Gareth Bale, who began his career in the club’s youth sides. He was subsequently spotted by scouts as an eight-year old playing for the Civil Service’s six-a-side team in Newport by scouts from Southampton.[5][6]
