starbucks kyoto, 2017-06-29, Kyoto’s Japanese-Style Starbucks Opening & Look Inside, Kyoto’s newest Starbucks at Ninenkaza is arguably the most beautiful in the world! It retains the old historical feel of the Higashiyama area — with good coffee, of course! This area of Japan doesn’t have many foreign owned chains, Starbucks may be the first, so they’ve gone to great length to make sure the building, decor fit in.
Visitors must remove their shows when going into some of the rooms, especially on the tatami. The store fits 55 people but since the tatami is seat less, a few more may be able to cram in.
The store is one way movement meaning you order your coffee when you enter, walk through the corridor to the back of the first floor and wait for your drink by a Japanese garden outside the window. There are some seats on the first floor but most visitors go to the second floor, up the steps after receiving their coffee. Once you go up, you can’t return down again the same way.
There is a bee hive that the store preserved. It was in the old building so they kept it and it’s seen through a glass window in the ceiling on the 2nd floor.
The store features:
★ Tamami
★ Small room
★ Japanese decorations
★ Beautiful wood counters and tables, ONLY in JAPAN * GO

So, my group was surprised that I had Starbucks on my list of places to visit. Rightfully so, it is the first Starbucks to have tatami. This location was originally a Japanese house turned into a Starbucks. It has 2 floors. Among the usual coffee…drinks we are accustomed to in the states, this Starbucks also carry special alcoholic drinks. Be sure to check or print out their drink menu as the beverage list is super long. This was a nice little break after walking Sannenzaka Street. (Hope you didn’t fall down the steps.) Our visit was before the pandemic so masks and hand sanitizers were not required.More

So, we love Japan, and love the culture and the architecture. This starbucks is located on one of our favorite streets in the Gion distrcit – all traditional buildings, lovely cobbled streets, young Japanese walking about in their Kimono’s for pictures – and this starbucks…just fits right in! You actually have to really look to even spot that it is a Starbucks at all! Inside they have lovely tatami sitting areas to enjoy your favorite’s.
All in all, an amazing experience, and i like that Starbucks have done an amazing job at having this completely in keeping with the area.More

As Starbucks lover (Don’t Hate!) this was an experience. While walking on the path don’t blink, you might miss it. The sign is only 16cm (6 inches) and you will not know its a Starbucks. Slide the wooden door open and they hand you trifold…menu. Never seen a Starbucks menu with a food pairing suggestion before.
Baristas speak English well. Great variety of food choices and great seasonal pastries. (It was Fall / Halloween)
Best experience was being able to sit on Tatama mats while enjoying my coffee.
Great Experience.More

The same Starbucks experience, but in a totally different environment. They kept the traditional so that the establishment blended with the architecture around it.

I found this spot through a youtube video I saw before heading to Japan. I believe it didn’t look much like a Starbucks in the video but now they’ve decorated and put signs up on the outside to indicate that they are. Nonetheless, it is…still an amazing little gem in this bustling area of Kyoto and it is an experience to sit in their 2nd floor!More

I’m not a fan of Starbucks, but I found the experience of visiting this global chain coffee shop quite interesting. The thing I like the most about this coffee shop is how subtly it absorbs itself into the historic setting around. Housed in a dimly…lit old wooden house, it has kept the narrow staircases, tatami seats and wooden windows. Fun cafe experience!More

This starbucks is housed in an old building and it could easily have been missed if Google Map didn’t indicate that I have passed the location.
We went early like 9am and we were able to place orders quickly and go up to level 2…where the tatami seating was. The crowd started coming in after us.
Because of the crowd, we also did not want to spend a long time there and deprive customers of seats.
There is only 1 unisex toilet on Level 2 and you are advised to use the public toilets in a nearby park.
For the experience of having a meal in a historical building with tatami seating, I think once is enough.More

Very unique Starbucks in that you can have your coffee and snacks in a traditional Japanese dining setting where you sit on the floor. It’s very hard to find space upstairs for this kind of setting, but the seats downstairs are also nice, but not…traditional. The lineup is long but the staff does a great job making it go as fast as possible. Worth a visit if you’re in the Gion area.More

This one is deep in Gion district, and it’s the ONLY way to experience the very most unique Starbucks you’ll ever find. It’s front decor is strict Japanese traditional building. inside you can choose to sit on chairs and table. or on the “ground” on…pillows and spinning table in the Japanese fashion. I’m very thankful our family was able to find this location. It was a great experience.More

It was kind of cool being in an old style/traditional place. Perhaps you do only go for the gimmick but service is class and the coffee isn’t any more expensive than your usual starbucks. We loved the area for a while and did try a…local coffee shop too. A little bit more personal than starbucks but to be fair to the starbucks guys they are usually too busy!!!More
