Early life
Beckham was born at Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone, London, England.[28] He is the son of Sandra Georgina (née West; b. 1949), a hairdresser, and David Edward Alan “Ted” Beckham (b. Edmonton, London, 1948), a kitchen fitter; the couple married in 1969 in the London Borough of Hackney.[29] He was given the middle name Robert in honour of Bobby Charlton, his father’s favourite footballer.[30] He has an older sister, Lynne Georgina, and a younger sister, Joanne Louise. He attended Chingford County High School in Ridgeway Park, Chingford.[31] In a 2007 interview, Beckham said that, “At school whenever the teachers asked, ‘What do you want to do when you’re older?’ I’d say, ‘I want to be a footballer.’ And they’d say, ‘No, what do you really want to do, for a job?’ But that was the only thing I ever wanted to do.”[32] Beckham’s maternal grandfather was Jewish,[33] and Beckham has referred to himself as “half Jewish“[34] and wrote in his autobiography “I’ve probably had more contact with Judaism than with any other religion”.[35] In his book Both Feet on the Ground, Beckham stated that growing up he attended church every week with his parents, because that was the only way he could play football for their team.[36]
His parents were fanatical Manchester United supporters who frequently travelled 200 miles (320 km) to Old Trafford from London to attend the team’s home matches.[37] David inherited his parents’ love of Manchester United, and his main sporting passion was football. He attended one of Bobby Charlton’s Soccer Schools in Manchester and won the chance to take part in a training session with Barcelona, as part of a talent competition.[38] He played for a local youth team called Ridgeway Rovers, which was coached by his father, Stuart Underwood, and Steve Kirby. Beckham was a Manchester United mascot for a match against West Ham United in 1986. Young Beckham had trials with his local club Leyton Orient, Norwich City and attended Tottenham Hotspur‘s school of excellence, though never represented the club in a match. During a two-year period in which Beckham played for Brimsdown Rovers‘ youth team, he was named Under-15 Player of the Year in 1990.[39] He also attended Bradenton Preparatory Academy, but signed schoolboy forms at Manchester United on his 14th birthday, and subsequently signed a Youth Training Scheme contract on 8 July 1991.[40] Beckham was a late developer and not selected to represent the England Schoolboys team primarily on account of his small size.[41]
History[edit]
The Academy is said to have been inspired by Beckham’s attendance as a boy at the Bobby Charlton Soccer School. Wanting to give later generations of children the same experience, he put his name to two facilities in 2005.
London[edit]
The Academy in London was situated on the Greenwich Peninsula in east Greenwich, close to The O2 and North Greenwich Underground station. Its temporary building was opened on 28 November 2005, with backing from the Anschutz Entertainment Group and sponsorship from Volkswagen Group and Adidas. Its indoor arena housed two full-sized, artificially turfed pitches, alongside an education and administration centre, and a sports medical centre. Its “likely” closure was announced on 27 November 2009, replaced by a mobile academy which could travel around the UK and further afield.[3] Despite the millionaire player’s backing, the London Academy’s closure included redundancies among coaching and support staff, and deprived hundreds of children (including Beckham’s niece and two nephews) from east and south-east London of their football training.[4]
The facility was subsequently known as The London Soccerdome and used for football coaching though run by a different organisation. It closed in October 2014, with the site to be redeveloped into housing, and the dome structure being dismantled and re-erected in Southend as part of the Fossetts Farm Stadium for Southend United Football Club.[5]
California[edit]
The Los Angeles Academy was based at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills, which is a $150 million multi-sport facility built on 125 acres (0.51 km2) of land (and home of Major League Soccer (MLS) team the Los Angeles Galaxy). The California branch also closed in late 2009.[6]
In 2009, the ‘David Beckham Academy’ brand was extended to a range of books about football.[7]

Reception[edit]
IGN gave the Game Boy Advance version of the game a negative review, rating it 2.2 out of 10. IGN criticized the gameplay stating “The Artificial intelligence (AI) provides no challenge, the controls provide no depth, and the gameplay provides no fun” and the sound by saying it was “eerily silent”.[4]

Early life
Beckham was born at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex, United Kingdom, and raised in Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire.[10] She is the eldest of three children of Jacqueline Doreen (née Cannon), a former insurance clerk and hairdresser,[11] and Anthony William Adams, who worked as an electronics engineer.[10] They founded an electronics wholesale business which allowed a comfortable upbringing for Victoria, her sister, Louise,[1] and her brother, Christian Adams.[12] Beckham’s great-great-great-grandfather was German artist and revolutionary Carl Heinrich Pfänder and her great-great granduncle was Minnesota politician William Pfaender.[13][14]
After watching the musical film Fame in 1980, she decided to pursue a musical career.[1][15] Jacqueline and Anthony Adams enrolled her at Jason Theatre School.[1] In 1991, Beckham entered Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom, Surrey and studied dance and modelling.[1][2] Beckham attended St. Mary’s High School in Cheshunt, where she was embarrassed by her family’s wealth and often begged her father not to drop her off outside the school in their Rolls Royce.[16] Eventually, she became a member of a band called Persuasion.[17]
Toponymy[edit]
The River Ching runs through the area, and the town of Chingford is close to a number of fords of that river. However, old maps and descriptions give a name for the settlement long before the river has a name and it is likely that the name of the river as “Ching” arose long after the settlement was named. The alternative view is that the ford crossed the Lea, and a location near Cook’s Ferry has been suggested.[2]
The area of Chingford is referenced in the Doomsday book as “Cingefort” from 1066AD.[3] It is thought that, similarly to how Kingston upon Thames appears in Domesday Book of 1086AD as Chingestone and Chingetun(e), with ching being old English for the king, that Chingford could refer to the King’s river, and Kings Ford. This idea is compounded by links to royalty using the area for hunting in centuries gone by, with Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge[4] still standing in North Chingford.[5] Furthermore, there is evidence of King Harold Harefoot having lived in Chingford and the environs in the 11th century, a date which ties in with the Old English use of “Ching” for King.
Another suggested explanation by place name genealogists is that the settlement’s name has its origin as “Shingly Ford”—that is, a ford over a waterway containing shingles.[6] However, the genealogists’ assertion is likely to be incorrect, as the usage of the placename name “Cingefort” in the Doomsday book predates the coining of the word “Shingle.” The earliest known usage of the Middle English word shingle is 1200AD and the word was not used to describe loose stones on a waterway until three centuries later in the 1500s.[7]
A further possibility derives from the form Chagingeford recorded in 1204, which may mean the ford of the dwellers by the stumps. The ford over the Lea may have been at Cook’s Ferry. The remains of pile dwellings, covering a considerable area, were found near the mouth of the Ching between 1869 and 1901, when the reservoirs were being built.[8]
